Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva is a red wine made by Bodega Classica in the D.O. La Rioja. Bodega Classica aims to produce "contemporary classic wines," combining traditional methods with a modern touch. This is the first vintage of this Gran Reserva. If it follows in the footsteps of its younger sibling, López de Haro Crianza, it's likely to become one of next year's bestsellers. Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva is made from a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano grapes. The grapes come from old vines located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town with a rich winemaking tradition at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The estates are situated on terraces alongside the River Ebro. These are poor soils that yield a low production but high-quality grapes. The harvest is done manually, and the grapes are transported to the winery in small trailers. Fermentation takes place in 30,000 kg tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC. After fermentation, the grapes are macerated for two weeks. Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva is aged in French and American oak barrels for over 30 months, with transfers every quarter. Once the aging in barrels is completed, it rests in the bottle for a minimum of 3 years before being released to the market.
